Ooty summer festival comes to an end

The month-long summer festival in Ooty held from May 1st to May 31st came to a successful end on Thursday.

A valedictory function was conducted to mark the end of the festival. This function was held in Research Centre for Tribal Culture (RCTC). The month-long festival was attended by more than 10 lakh tourists and flower show, vegetable show, fruit show, spice show and rose show were conducted successfully. There were also many entertaining cultural activities and tribal programmes.

For the first time, tourist police were introduced in Ooty. Speaking about it, Nilgiris SP Shanmugapriya said, “Wearing reflective jackets, many tourist police guided the crowds and maintained traffic in important tourist spots. Traffic could also be maintained during VIP’s visit to the flower show.”

As a part of the festival, a night bazaar in Garden Road and a book fair for 10 days were conducted for the first time. A five-day cultural programme was also conducted by South Zone Cultural Centre. Nilgiris collector J Innocent Divya said, “The ecology of this picturesque hill station should be maintained by the locals and tourists by not using plastics and other hazardous substances and by not indulging in illegal construction.”

On the day of the farewell function, Nilgiris collector and Rajya Sabha MP KR Arjunan presented mementos to all the patrons, schools and officials for their enormous contribution to the festival’s success.
